Principles of Wavefront Sensing and Reconstruction

A variety of approaches to wavefront sensing and reconstruction are surveyed as they are used in adaptive optics and related applications. These include the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm; shearing interferometry; and Shack-Hartmann, curvature, and pyramid wavefront sensing. Emphasis is placed on the relevant optics and mathematics, which are developed in some detail for Shack-Hartmann and curvatur...

Wind speed measurement from Shack Hartmann Wavefront Sensor data: An experimental review of cross-correlation peak detection

The mean velocity of the atmospheric wind is an important parameter in characterizing the turbulence above an astronomical telescope. Real-time wind velocity measurement is exceedingly essential to update the design metrics of the adaptive optics system periodically to improve the dynamic performance. A Shack Hartmann Wavefront Sensor (SHWS), which is generally used in astronomical telescope ad...

Constrained matched filtering for extended dynamic range and improved noise rejection for Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing.

We recently introduced matched filtering in the context of astronomical Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing with elongated sodium laser beacons [Appl. Opt. 45, 6568 (2006)]. Detailed wave optics Monte Carlo simulations implementing this technique for the Thirty Meter Telescope dual conjugate adaptive optics system have, however, revealed frequent bursts of degraded closed loop residual wavefront e...

Direct wavefront sensing in adaptive optical microscopy using backscattered light.

Adaptive optics has been used to compensate the detrimental effects of aberrations in a range of high-resolution microscopes. We investigate how backscattered laser illumination can be used as the source for direct wavefront sensing using a pinhole-filtered Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. It is found that the sensor produces linear response to input aberrations for a given specimen. The gradie...

Comparison of sorting algorithms to increase the range of Hartmann-Shack aberrometry.

Recently many software-based approaches have been suggested for improving the range and accuracy of Hartmann-Shack aberrometry. We compare the performance of four representative algorithms, with a focus on aberrometry for the human eye. Algorithms vary in complexity from the simplistic traditional approach to iterative spline extrapolation based on prior spot measurements. Range is assessed for...
